New and improved mold making tutorial.

Finished work on a new and improved mold making tutorial.

Latex mold making: Skulls on the Cheap

The old one had most of it’s pictures lost due to an older host, so new and improved, with several years worth of insights added as well as tips on coloring skulls for blacklight use.

  1. Hey uno, your link to the skull tutorial isn’t working, just an FYI.

I am using your BYOB tutorial with the kids in my school this year, so expect a little bit of traffic over the next couple of weeks.

  2. Thanks GK, silly typo in the link, should be working now. Those poor kids, I hope they are all using the updated method with the plaster wrap. SOOOOO much quicker! If they have any questions, they can register and ask right on the tutorial, I’ll be happy to answer. I’ve used that thing at least once a year since writing it up.

  3. Ya, it is working now.

I picked up the supplies for them to use, so definitely they are using the plaster wrap! I don’t have the time or patience to deal with them working with paper. Only real difference is that I didn’t have the flower wire, so I am using a slightly thiner gauge – hope it is strong enough, but I think it will be (it is basically the same as garbage bag ties, but longer). As it doesn’t need to be articulated, I am hoping they will be able to make it over the next month or so (Forensic Science class) along with a false skin made of cloth (a home depot $3 paint tarp) and fake organs (packing bubbles).

I have one student assigned as a photographer, so hopefully we will get some good pic’s.

I have two forensic classes, they each design a murder scene (with body) and the other class has to solve the crime scene over the last couple weeks of school. See how it works. In the past they had lots of fun, but I have always had trouble getting them to do the writing part. This time, I have a lot of focus on the writing so hopefully they get the build made along with the plans. Wait and see.

  4. The thinner wire, you might want to work from the spine, and only do about half the rib, wait for that to dry, then do the front half.

Skin, I’d suggest latex and paper towels as being more realistic, but also expensive. Not really a tutorial, but I made a skin out of more plaster wrap on Trevor, you can see a pretty detailed build on him here: http://www.halloweenforum.com/halloween-props/112312-recondite-unorthodoxs-2012-theme-open-discussion.html

(It’s a pretty spot on mummy sculpt everywhere but the head too. The head I wanted that style. )

Another option I’ve had good luck with and others use as well is cloth (muslin) or paper towel dipped in paint. Obvious mess issues there, but makes a good skin.

Hope the kids have fun, love to see some pics.
