It’s that time of year again.

Hmm, driving home, color starting to change, crisp 34 degree temps. Ah, IT IS TIME!

Lagoon has started their Halloween season.

With all this travel, I have pretty much settled in on what we’re doing for the year, and a lot of that is waiting for time to harvest. But, I gotta scratch the itch somehow…

Once again, I think we’ll enter the Guild Wars Halloween Art Contest.

Skipped it last year, after Charr had won in 2009. I think it’s time to go again, just to have a little fun with the season change. Now, to find a suitable subject….

Farewell to Charr.

A bittersweet weekend.

It saw the departure of a landmark.

From Year of the Charr

Charr marked numberous landmarks for me. First segmented build. First use of burlap, which has become a staple. First use of conduit, which is also a staple.

However, he was BIG. And took a sizeable portion of my available storage. So, it was early in the year that I decided Charr must go. I had plans to go in and salvage the conduit and anything else I could muster. Toyed with the idea of giving him one final year. But, he had to go.

From Halloween 2009

Aside from Fred, no prop has garnered more comments than Charr.

It was a hard decision to let him go. However, I am pleased that Charr will live on, he has simply moved considerably south, finding a new home in Diablo’s Dome, a new local haunt starting up this year. There he will join Steve, and a host of my skulls in providing entertainment.

Shortly, a brand new Chimera will be heading south to join them as well…

Then we’ll get back to our regulardy scheduled oddities.

The bridge of death.

I’ve circled in on our major project for the year. The bridge of death.

As with 90% of our naming convention, it’s name originates in comedy.

The beginnings of the idea took shape years ago, when a circular hole was worn into our grass…Last year was also rough on the grass.

From 2011 buildup

“A boardwalk”, I thought, would be the perfect solution. But, I just couldn’t get past how to integrate such a thing into our yard. Still, it remained in the back of my head.

I’ve long posted how one of the places I find inspiration is in Guild Wars. Both Project Nightfall and Charr coming directly from there. The latter even winning their Halloween contest.

I was out sight-seeing and stumbled on this, and instantly fell in love.

A ruined bridge to nowhere. Call me crazy, but I can see it fitting in quite well…

From The Harvest

Fewer uprights to block views, yes…I can also see my skulls sitting on some of those uprights, bringing back some of the field of skulls to the equation.

I needed wood. LOTS of wood. My wife mentioned as much on Facebook, I’ve mentioned it to several folks, and we’ve gone knocking on a few doors of houses I’ve noticed lost fences over the winter.

Friends and neighbors have been pouring in donations so far. Downed fences are the ideal, but any scrap wood is useful. If you know of anyone looking to offload some, send em my way.

Ideas….always ideas…

One thing about me is I’m always on the look out for some new ideas.

My wife and I were out shopping a couple weeks back, and I ran into this…thing…in a really oddball store. (yes, couple weeks, it was on my wife’s camera and took me a while to pilfer it.)

Now I knew instantly there had to be some way to incorporate something with that same feeling into Halloween. I also studied it’s rather interesting construction, appearing to be simply rope wound over a form with a wooden mask and shells glued into place. (and a price tag of a few thousand)

I snapped the pic and moved on, not dwelling on the idea.

Then, a few nights ago something strange happened. I was sitting here watching South Pacific. (yes, the musical) And, there came on a scene with something rather not at all like the statue above. And somehow, the vision here, mixed with my initial ideas on that statue, and some cutesy stuff one of the neighbors does, and the three have jumbled around in my addled brain to produce this rather interesting idea. IF the weather ever clears up for a length of time, I’ll show it to you as it’s just plain too hard to explain at the moment.

On the Stele front, after the weather tried to mess up our last update, we managed to save the panels, but weather has really delayed the continuation of the effort.

I did manage to get the panels attached to one of the Stele, however.

From 2010 Buildup

With any luck I’ll get the second attached, and we’ll be able to start on the fronts. I need LOTS more paper to make into mache, however…

Stele work

It’s been slow going around these parts.

Plans for the year are needing to be changed, and some choices are going to need to be made, but it’s all for the best in the long run.

Our stele have been presenting me with quite the conundrum of late. Just how to do the sides.

Inspiration struck from the shipping dept at work, throwing out some…well, corrugated cardboard, but it’s flexible.

So, we made some templates out of this stuff, and have just finished a HUGE batch of mache to get the sides coated. From here, we’ll be able to curve another piece to fit over the fronts.

From 2010 Buildup

Had enough mache left over to finish up under the mouths on the stele as well. Hoping the hot weather scheduled for this week will help these dry swift, so they’ve been left out on the driveway, where we get the most sun. Oh, sure, the neighbors may wonder, but I think most of them are used to odd things at my place by now.

For those keeping track at home, these things have now gone through at least 4 different types of paper mache. From Celluclay to several home brews, this latest being paper pulp, wood glue, and joint compound. We’re getting closer to circling in on a favorite, but it’s not there yet, hence the no recipes of yet.
